Story Maker
A journey in four chapters
Your decisions decide who you become and how your story ends.
Quick Start Press Begin, then choose a chapter from the map. Read each scene and pick an answer or make a choice. Knowledge questions score points and earn insight; artifact puzzles reward careful thought; reflective choices have no right answer, but they shape your journey. Complete all four chapters to discover your Navigator archetype and one of twenty-four endings. Use the Map, Sound and Fullscreen buttons above the gameboard at any time. Your progress saves automatically in your browser.
What is Story Maker?
Story Maker is an interactive journey through the ideas that science fiction does best: thinking machines, watched societies, manufactured realities, and the futures we might still choose. Across four serialized chapters you will face original scenarios inspired by the classics of the genre, from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to the films that defined the modern imagination, each revealed after you have made your choice.
It is a quiz, a story, and a mirror. Some questions test what you know, and reward it. Others have no correct answer at all: they quietly chart how you think, where you place your trust, and what you would carry into the future. By the journey’s end, the game knows your archetype, and your ending is written accordingly.
Inspired by influential science fiction books and movies, this game was designed to be an interactive experience combining narrative and elements of a quiz to take players on a journey. The Four Chapters
1. Machines and Minds
Patron: Prometheus
Fire was the first borrowed power. Meet the thinking machines, and decide what we owe the things we make.
2. Power and Society
Patron: Daedalus and Icarus
Every labyrinth has a builder. Cameras, comfort, forecasts and scores: who watches, who decides, who pays?
3. Reality and Illusion
Patron: The Cave of Shadows
A phantom once stood for Helen, and a wall of shadows for the world. Learn to suspect what your feed shows you.
4. The Human Future
Patron: The Return of Odysseus
Every long voyage ends at its own Ithaca. Pack the crate, answer the signal, and decide what you do with the fire.
Quick-Start Guide
- Begin at the map. Press Begin on the title screen, then choose Chapter 1 (chapters can be played in any order, but the story flows best in sequence). The Map button above the gameboard returns you here whenever you wish; your place in a chapter is always kept.
- Read the scene, then choose. Each scenario sets a situation and offers choices. Knowledge questions have one correct answer. Reflective choices have none: pick what you would truly do, because the game is listening.
- Earn points and insight. Correct answers score 10, 15 or 20 points by difficulty, and each one earns an insight token. Between scenes, short signal checks offer bonus chances to earn more insight. Answer three in a row correctly for a streak bonus.
- Work the artifacts. Once per chapter you will meet an artifact puzzle: braziers to kindle, plates to turn, lenses to align, gears to home. Solving one is worth 15 points, plus a 5 point bonus if you manage it without spending insight on a hint.
- Complete the circle. Finish all four chapters to receive your Navigator Rating, your archetype with its strengths and blind spot, and your ending: Dawn, Crossroads or Long Shadow, decided by the pivotal choices you made along the way.
Scoring and Ratings
🎯 Knowledge Points
Correct answers score 10, 15 or 20 points depending on difficulty. The game adapts: answer well and the questions grow bolder.
🔥 Streak Bonus
Every third consecutive correct answer adds a 5 point streak bonus. One wrong answer resets the streak, so think before you tap.
💡 Insight Tokens
Correct answers and signal checks earn insight. Spend it on artifact hints when you are stuck, but a hinted solve forfeits the artifact’s bonus.
🧭 Navigator Rating
Your final score out of 100 places you in one of five bands: Cadet, Ensign, Voyager, Navigator, or the coveted Starfarer at 80 and above.
🌟 Eight Archetypes
Your reflective choices chart four inner compasses. Where they point decides your archetype, from the Architect to the Wayfinder, each with strengths and a blind spot.
📖 Twenty-Four Endings
Eight archetypes, three tones each. Your pivotal decisions steer the tone: repair the world and reach the Dawn, or watch the Long Shadow fall.
Tips for Travellers
Answer honestly
Reflective choices carry no points, so there is nothing to gain by guessing what the game wants. The truest answers produce the truest ending.
Watch for hidden paths
Certain correct answers unlock scenes most players never see. If a hidden path opens, take it; it costs nothing and deepens the story.
Spend insight late
Hints are most tempting early and most valuable late. Bank your insight for the artifacts that genuinely stump you.
Read the reveals
After each scenario, an Inspired By card names the classic behind it. Collected codex entries can be browsed from the map at any time.
Make it yours
Use the Sound and Fullscreen buttons above the gameboard. Progress saves automatically in your browser, so you can travel a chapter at a time.
Travel again
No two journeys are quite the same: rotating scenarios appear on replay, your codex carries over, and a different way of answering earns a different ending.
