Case Studies

Before buying a product or service, potential customers can gain insights into how it might perform within their business by reading case studies describing its use in the real world. For example, a B2B company selling an eCommerce SaaS product could provide case studies detailing the experiences of their clients. From initial goals, challenges overcome and solutions developed, to user experience, staff productivity, cost savings and increased profits, informative case studies could attract new leads and sales.

The sample case study below was produced by fictional B2B technology company RetailCoachingLMS. They sell a learning management system (LMS), developed for retail businesses. The case study looks at the experiences of fictional electrical goods retailer TechWorldElectrics, which uses the LMS to onboard and train their employees.

TechWorldElectrics Case Study

About TechWorldElectrics

From a single high street shop selling domestic electrical appliances that opened thirty years ago, TechWorldElectrics has grown to into an electrical retailer with one hundred and twenty stores nationwide. They pride themselves on the quality and affordability of products they sell, which includes a wide range of domestic appliances and consumer electronics. Investing in the training and career development of their 2,500 employees helps them to attract and retain motivated people, who provide excellent customer service.

Integrating Virtual and Real

TechWorldElectrics has a successful eCommerce platform, but recognises the value of bricks and mortar stores. With locations on high streets and out of town shopping centres, they have integrated online and offline shopping and provide next day delivery nationwide. They have invested in experiential retail, teaming up with other businesses, to run event that provide memorable experiences and build customer relationships.

Selecting Their LMS Provider

Wanting to streamline onboarding and training processes, TechWorldElectrics approached a number of LMS providers. As a company priding itself on being at the cutting edge of retail technology, they had ambitious plans to make use of the latest developments to deliver the most effective learning experience to their employees. The vision offered by RetailCoachingLMS matched their ambitious plans and our successful delivery of similar results for other clients convinced them that we could deliver what they needed.

The Challenge

TechWorldElectrics has built up a vast quantity of high quality content and expertise, often in difficult to update printed guides or on computer systems with limited access. Their Intranet and website, provide employees with procedural guidance and product information, but the previous learning process was often slow and inefficient. With stores located across the country, more locations opening soon and plans to expand overseas, they needed a learning platform that could scale as they grow.

Implementing The LMS

The project management team from RetailCoachingLMS took the time needed to understand TechWorldElectrics business requirements. They put together a team of some of their most experienced employees from different departments, to work with TechWorldElectrics. This ensured the LMS delivered what was needed and made good use of the retail clients existing content and expertise. Their existing systems were integrated with the new LMS, to deliver a platform that was responsive, scalable, efficient and user friendly. Using VR and AR a simulated virtual environment was developed for store training.

Previously TechWorldElectrics relied upon a number of often incompatible systems, including legacy applications that had been developed and installed decades earlier. The different interface designs were difficult to navigate and lacked mobile access, requiring personnel to use dedicated terminals, often taking them away from core activities, such as sales. RetailCoachingLMS used project management software to ensure everyone was kept up to date on progress and also put in place improved reporting systems. The retailer decided to take this opportunity to implement plans to bring their other systems up to date, a process that would involve the LMS provider working with the clients IT department.

Results

All personnel, from entry level to senior management, can now easily access up to date information relevant to their role, using an intuitive interface available on a range of desktop and mobile digital devices. This has delivered onboarding and training cost and time savings, led to greater user satisfaction and improved information retention. Easier access to information has also assisted decision making in departments such as marketing and business planning. Staff trained using the new LMS feel more confident selling the benefits of the companies wide range of products and providing support, which has led to customers spending twenty percent more. They have also received an average thirty percent higher customer satisfaction rating.

Each TechWorldElectrics store follows a standard layout, designed to optimise efficiency. This was recreated using VR and AR, enabling employees wearing VR headsets to be trained within simulated store environments. In addition to personnel enjoying the experience and being able to interact with colleagues based at other locations, subsequent analysis showed a seventeen percent increase in average retention of information. Training could be delivered in less than half the time required for traditional methods. Standardisation of training material was also improved and in the simulated store environment staff could experience difficult situations, similar to those that they might encounter when interacting with customers in the real world. They could then safely discuss the best way to respond.
